I live in South Carolina but call Damascus, Va my old "hometown". My father, and several other family and friends, have been laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
I dearly love my father and try to honor his precious memory by placing beautiful flowers on his grave at least four times a year. With the high price of nice silk flowers, every time my cost is anywhere between $75 - $100 to adequately fill the two vases on each side of his stone, amounting to around $400 a year.
I have been doing this since my father died in 1999. EVERY time I do so, some pitiful human being comes and steals half or more of the flowers from the grave. It leaves my father's grave disheveled and tacky and I am losing a large amount of money.
I'm not wealthy. I don't have money to replace the stolen flowers - they would only be stolen again.
I have only found Sunset memorial employees at the cemetery once, in all the years. I asked if there was something they would do, since this is a grave being vandalized. The two men might could have been less concerned. I ask if the cemetery was willing to put in a simple, rather inexpensive security camera. That met with a hardy "no". One other time I left a note taped to the door of the "office", located on the grounds.
I am brokenhearted at how my father's grave is left and with a cemetery unwilling to properly care for the honored graves of those we love. I understand it is a paycheck to them, but it is respect and love for those of us who left our treasures there.
Is there anyone who can help me hold Sunset Memorial Cemetery accountable to protect the graves of those who have been entrusted to them?
